Traveling Sober: Navigating New Horizons Without Losing Your North Star

Greetings fellow sober travelers! You’ve bravely navigated the path of sobriety, but now there’s a new frontier: travel. Understandably, swapping your trusty terrain for new territories can be a smidge anxiety-provoking. But fear not! We’re here with the ultimate guide to keep your sober compass pointing true north. Buckle up, buttercup!

1. Crystal Clear Mornings: Your New Travel Buddy

Imagine exploring new lands with the freshest of perspectives, feeling the ground beneath your feet, and remembering every single detail. No foggy memories, just vibrant vistas, and your untainted spirit. This is what traveling the world is all about, making memories and staying present.

Morning nature walks are a must-do for this sober gal!

2. Your Sober Suitcase Staples:

  • Distraction Delights: When in Rome, and you feel a twinge of anxiety, have a go-to treat. It may sound silly but we tend to make poor choices when we are hungry. Sometimes a quick snack is all that is needed to keep our blood sugar up and obsession with alcohol down. Also, planning out meals can be a fun way to know what temptation may be there before your trip so you don’t end up in a pub or bar for dinner.
  • Trusty Journal: It’s not just for teenage diary entries! Jot down your joys, jitters, and that joke the cab driver told you. Journaling is therapeutic and gives you a moment to collect your thoughts.
  • Your Power Playlist: Because sometimes you just need Beyoncé telling you you’re flawless. Set up a playlist in whatever app you prefer with inspiring songs that will keep you going. Make sure everything is downloaded and linked so you can jam out or relax when needed.

3. Dive Deeper into Cultures, Not Cocktails

Harness that sober superpower of yours and really engage with the locals. Trade stories, not shots. You’ll be amazed at the genuine connections you’ll make when the world isn’t swaying. Many cultures are not focused on alcohol as shocking as this may sound. Learn about others and focus on positive interactions as you broaden your experience.

4. Curate Alcohol-Free Adventures

Why sip wine in France when you can master the art of croissant-making? Ditch the beer in Germany for a fairytale castle tour. The world is brimming with experiences that don’t require a toast. Many of us have spent most of our travel years looking for the best beverage spots, now just look for the best experiences, your trip will be all the better for it!

5. Phone a Friend, Preferably Me!

Maintain ties with your sober buddies or support groups. A quick chat or message can recharge your resolve, especially when that airport bar is giving you the eyes. This is where i can come in and help. As a sober travel coach, I would love to be “that friend” for you! Send me an email via the contact page and I can let you know all about sober travel coaching and how I can help you before, during, and after your trip. Sometimes just knowing that you have someone in your corner makes all the difference!

6. Book Sober-Friendly Stays

Opt for accommodations that aren’t centered around the nightlife. Trust me, the sound of nature beats a pulsating club downstairs. There are so many resources for sober folks that a quick Google search will guide you in the right direction. See my future posts with links to sober-friendly travel companies and accommodation.

Setting Sail with Sobriety

Look, travel jitters are real, but they’re no match for your rock-solid resolve. With every sober step in a new city, you’re not just exploring the world; you’re redefining your journey. What a gift it is to not only create courage within yourself and take the leap to adventure but also to remember your trip and not sleep through morning yoga at the hotel due to a hectic hangover. The world is yours again. Go explore it!

Enjoying a sunset sober is not only wonderful, it’s free!
