Top 5 Reasons Rhonda is a Must See when Traveling to Spain
Rhonda is a magnificent hilltop town a couple hours from Costa Del Sol. It is a top choice for most travelers going to Southern Spain. As I said in my post, Top Reasons Costa Del Sol, Spain Makes a Fantastic First International Trip,” Rhonda was the first place my well traveled mother recommended I go with my husband on his first trip out of North America. I am so thankful she recommended this gorgeous hilltop town. Here is why…
1. Breathtaking Views from The New Bridge Can’t be Beat
You see it in pictures and read in Rick Steves Guidebook but nothing compares to the real thing! The New Bridge joins El Mercadillo (the market) to La Ciudad (The Town.) Below it is the amazing El Tajo Gorge. Talk about a photo opportunity of a lifetime! You can walk along the bridge and sides for free, making as many memories as possible!
2. They Have the World’s Oldest Bull Ring
This Plaza De Toros, built in 1795 by Martin de Aldehuela was the very first bull ring in the world. Although they no longer have bulls fighting here, it is still a great piece of history to witness. Personally I am not into animal fighting but did appreciate the sights and audio tours available in english.
3. You can Face your Fear of Heights
Now, I’m not saying I have a fear of heights, but I am saying that the altitude is really something to be respected here in Rhonda. Looking down onto farmland and houses makes you feel like a giant in the clouds (or like you are playing monopoly with those tiny houses.) I say, create courage within yourself and check out this view!
4. Eat the Amazing Food
One word, paella. You have to get paella in Spain but you really need it from Rhonda. I love that they not only have the traditional seafood paella but also chicken. I’m not very into seafood so this was a treat. Almost every restaurant, big or small has paella. They also have garlic bread, pizza, and many beef dishes.
5. The Drive is an Adventure Worth Taking
From our resort in Mijas on the coast, it took us 2.5 hours on highways, toll roads, and windy hilltop streets to get to Rhonda but it was worth it! I always feel that it isn’t just the destination, it’s really the journey that we appreciate. Make sure to carry change for the tolls and get a rental car with GPS. You will lose service on cell phones so GPS will really help. There are tours available on Tripadviser if you would rather not drive. This reminded me of the highway to Hana in Hawaii, it’s an achievement.
